"McCall Smith's books are such a blessing. The characters spring to life upon the page and we feel we would know them if we bumped into them on the street. They are so wise. Mma Rotswane is so wise and yet we see her struggle between what she thinks is right, proper, and polite and what she wants. Mr. JLB Matekoni is such a fine man, so gentle and caring but so dominated by strong women such as Mma Potokwane the matron of the orphan farm. But even she is a godsend finally pulling him out of his inertia into marriage with Mma Rotaswane. The descriptions of Africa are simple but so evocative. The perfectly chosen words make you feel you are there under the wide sky, the brown earth with the exotic trees and animals. Reading one of these books is a refreshing trip into a world where people are so real including those who cheat and lie and worry about being hip, and sophisticated contrasted with those who have the "traditional" values of politeness, caring, and kindness."
"I have had the pleasure of reading all five installments of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency successively over the past couple of weeks. It was a great way to compare the books to each other while the prior one is still fresh in the memory. I enjoyed this one the least of the five book series. It is still an enjoyable read with all the characters that we have come to know and love in Precious Ramotswe's world but this book seemed to have less focus and was less compelling. The writing remains superb, as McCall Smith elegantly describes the African landscape and the unique "old Botswana" way of looking at life. He continues making commentaries on life and society, especially the interactions between women and men through the musings of the central characters. In this story, mystery and the solving of the mysteries seems to take a backseat to the personal lives of the characters and we are focused on Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni and his reluctance to get married as well as other problems that arise. The main mystery involves Mma Holonga a rich salon chain owner who is looking for a husband who is not only interested in her money. As usual the character of Mma Makutsi, adds a humorous as well as insightful touch to the plot. I would not recommend that this be the first book you read in the series as the characters are well established by now and the reader would miss the nuances portrayed in the story. In all, an enjoyable book but not my favorite in the series."
"Mma Ramotswe is back on the case. This time she has been hired to help a woman in finding out where she stands with her various beaus. Mma Ramotswe is not sure she understands why a woman would want to have four boyfriends, but she is more than willing to help. The goal is to find out whether the men truly care for her or if they are only dating her because of her wealth.
Her fiance, Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni is also busy. After helping her out with some work on her van, it comes to his attention that another mechanic in town is doing substandard work. Beside being a betrayal of peoples' trust, doing so may also endanger the drivers and their passengers. He takes it upon himself to try and show the other mechanic the light.
He also finds himself in trouble when the local orphanage is looking to raise some money. Mma Potokwani, the woman who runs the orphanage, where he met his two foster children, is able to talk him into a skydiving event to raise money. Mma Ramotswe is not sure that the is thrilled with the possibility, but she has nothing to fear as Mma Makutsi gets involved. With the help of Charlie, one of Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni's apprentices, she will find a solution that will not leave him with shame and allow the orphange to still get its money.
It is always a pleasure to visit with these characters and see where the story is going to take them, and the readers along with them. The book ends with quite a surprise, and it is one that will leave you happy. This is a nice addition to the series."
"I read this entire book today. Maybe it's because I waited in two NHS waiting rooms for over 3 hours, or maybe it's because this Ladies' No. 1 Detective Agency series has got me hooked.
In this fifth novel, Mwa Ramotswe deals with several issues including a potential charity parachute jump, an engagement with no wedding date in sight, a rich hairdresser with too many suitors, and no-good competitor to her fiance, Mr. J.L.B.Matekoni.
This novel wasn't as charming as the Kalahari Typing School for men, but the ending was heartwarming.
