"I bought copies of this book and gave it to the guys I coached with. What could be better than taking the task of coaching--of working to turn boys into responsible men more important? Great lessons on life and a great story too."
"must read for a father, with a young son. Moving, truthful and worth passing on. A wonderful alternative to mainstream thinking of raising young boys. Framing it up in sports, but translating to life."
"A sports psychology professor handed me this book to read, and it was certainly worth my while. It was one of the first sports-related books I read not pertaining to my senior thesis about women in sports, but unbeknownst to my professor, perhaps, it takes a hard look at the gender stereotypes often found in sports, especially one as hard-hitting and masculine as football. While the author, journalist Jeffrey Marx, doesn't specifically mention "gender" and "gendering" as issues, they read clearly in the text.
In the opening pages, Marx depicts Joe Ehrmann, football star on the Baltimore (now Indianapolis) Colts from 1973-80 and main character in the book, speaking to the team he coaches, Gilman School in Baltimore, Md., before a game:
What is our job as coaches? he asks his players. To love us, they respond. He asks, What is your job as players? To love each other.
Not exactly something you'd expect to hear in a football huddle pre-game, but by far an iconic moment in this book: Coach Ehrmann building "men for others" through sport.
Marx even takes what he learns in his session with Coach Ehrmann and applies them to his own relationship with his father, which closes out the book -- the sole qualm I had with it. Marx takes what he has learned and reflects it on himself, rather than letting Coach be the final point/person with which the reader comes away."
"I liked this book. Manhood - it's not about athletic ability, sexual prowess, or the ability to earn a million bucks. So why does our society ram that down our throats?! The book, (and more importantly, the main subject's personal philosophy) is that men are supposed to build relationships - built on love, respect, honor, and dignity. The fact that this message is told throughout a sportswriter's description of an exciting high school football season makes it that much more appealing to the average guy. Buy it and give it to a father, uncle, coach, cousin, or any other guy that serves as a role model for young boys."
