About this title: Kathy and Bruce Harrison have taken in foster children for over 10 years. In this dramatic memoir, Kathy writes about the experience, focusing on three of the children who have been in her care: Danny, retarded and potentially dangerous; Sara, promiscuous at age 6 because of her abused background; and Karen, an infant from a troubled home.

"Another Place at the Table is about a woman who runs a foster home for kids who have gone through tough times, whether its abuse, children who have been neglected, and many other cases. She shares the stories and her experiences she went through with each specific child and how it affected them, and changed their lives. This book related to the society in many ways. It made me realize that so many children out there need homes, its not just a one time deal. I related it to my life because I realized how lucky I am to have such wonderful parents who actually care about me, and that I shouldn't ever take them for granite, and learn to appreciate them. In chapter three around page 56, Harrison talks about real life situations, like how times were tough how they had to share clothes and give the kids hand-me-downs. It shows the children's reactions in the book, and gets very emotional. That's one thing tat made this book so effective, all the emotions. I cried a couple times while reading it. Girls old enough to handle all the emotions are the people who would enjoy this book most. If you don't like really touchy-feelings books, this isn't the book for you. Personally, this wasn't my type of book because I prefer the more happy books without sad stories in it, however it was still a great book to read. You just have to be able to deal with the heartbreaking stories. The writers style of writing was about her past experience and simply telling the stories of what happened with each of the children she took in her home. It's a great book and I recommend reading if you can handle the emotional stories."
"After reading this book, I have a huge amount of respect and admiration for Kathy and Bruce Harrison and all other foster parents who take in and love broken children. The stories of their foster children are shocking, heartbreaking, honest, sad, and sometimes even triumphant. We need more people like the Harrisons in this world!"
