"I picked up the third book in this series this summer. I liked it enough to go back and look for the first volume. Much of the 'wallflower" subplot instantly became clearer with this book.
I liked the relationship between Annabelle and Simon. Annabelle is a bit of a prig and social climber in the beginning, but she learns her lessons, especially about Simon Hunt very quickly.
Kleypas turns phrases well, obviously has studied her history and makes delightful heroes and heroines. I will find the other two volumes in this series sooner rather than later."
"Anabelle Peyton, Lillian and Daisy Bowman and Evangelline Jenner all have something in common: due to their particular situations, they are considered bad choices as far as wives go. As such, they are never courted by eligible men and all they do at balls and gatherings is to seat and be ignored by everyone.
Tired of their situation, the four spirited women decide to form a sort of an alliance; calling themselves "The Wallflowers" they devise plans to help one another find husbands.
Anabelle Peyton's situation is the most desperate of them all. Although she is a gentle-woman, her family has fallen on hard times; and everyone knows that a peer doesn't marry a lady without a dowry. That is why, despite her great beauty and suitable standard she can't get a husband. With her last season ending and the prospect of being "on-the-shelf" forever looming, the Wallflowers decide it's time for strong measures. They choose Lord Kendall as their target... but when Simon Hunt, a butcher's son turned rich industrialist decides he wants Anabelle for himself - as a mistress, of course - things get complicated.
This book was... okay. I started with book number 3 of the series and I loved it; as for this one I thought Simon Hunt was too forceful and I didn't like Anabelle that much either. One positive point: Kleypas describes the period with vivid detail, showing how difficult the trasition to modernity was in Victorian England because of how closed the mentalities were. The main male character is a rich man, but he isn't respected because of his birth; he was a butcher's son and not a peer and he made his fortune by working. On the other hand you see impoverished aristocracy throughout the book, a clear sign that land owning wasn't that profitable anymore."
"The first in the wallflower series and a great and delightful read.
While many of LK's books have some deal and have darker tones in them, this was much lighter, although there was a villain and a few troubles along the way for the h/h it never dug itself into darker waters.
Simon at first comes across as mysterious then a alpha male with the thought of only making Annabelle his mistress (me-Simon-you-MY-mistress) Simon is shown more of a man's man, working his way up the ladder in a world that peers still rule. A hero I love who's smart, protective with a wicked and cutting sense of humor. Annabelle may be a beauty but she had a great head on her shoulders and knows her looks won't take her far, so as she and the wallflowers plan to get a husband for herself, she starts to be drawn more and more to Simon then her target husband.
Simon and Annabella were a great couple, bringing out the best in each other. Annabella was surprised at Simon's insight into her mind, knowing her better then herself. Simon wanted to protect Annabelle with all his heart, but ends up surprised at her strength willing to risk herself to save him and vice versa.
The pace of the book was great never slowly down until the honeymoon, where your shown more of a sensual side between Simon and Annabelle relationship which kinda bugged me, until the pace was picked up again. I loved the wallflowers, the group of friends brought thoughts of my own friends and the trouble and fun we get into. While your introduced to the wallflowers and few others, LK doesn't overload you with to much, keeping focus on the main couple at all time. She also works a bit of history into the story, showing you the changes going through the world at the time which tickled the history lover in me.
Overall: a lighter theme read with great depth and a great HEA, making you looking forward to more from the Wallflowers"
