About this title: Red Hot Chili Peppers member Anthony Kiedis' autobiography, SCAR TISSUE, has all the sex, drugs, and rock & roll you'd expect from the story of a handsome young heroin-addicted vocalist of one of rock's most successful and influential bands. Kiedis' childhood sets the scene for his later life: his drug dealer father and the infant Kiedis party in the early '70s with rock aristocracy, including Keith Moon (who charmingly but disconcertingly looks after the kid in Los Angeles's famed rock & roll bar the Rainbow) and Cher (who snuggles naked into bed with the 8th-grade Kiedis while babysitting ...

"anthony kiedis taught me a LOT... about drugs. the things this man did to his body for the majority of his life are unthinkable. it makes me shudder to think about how many people are controlled by addiction and what they're willing to do... who they're willing to sacrifice, just to get their fix. whippets, speedballs, heroin, cocaine, alcohol, prescription narcotics, there's no end to what he put into his body in the midst of his career and rise to stardom.
the end of the book was a bit of a let-down. i enjoyed reading about his shenanigans, his stories about the music industry, insider looks at the people he worked with, and the women he loved throughout it all... but i was hoping for something more to wrap it all up. he ended it with information about the program and how AA and prayer and meditation helped him to get and finally stay clean. but what was the point of it all? why stay clean now after stints in all the major rehab facilities on the west coast?
it doesn't seem like there was ever anyone more important than he was to himself in his whole life, no one that he was willing to give the drugs up for.
in the end, the only one he never wanted to see him high... was his dog. he got clean, got a puppy, and started a new life. here's hoping it sticks this time."
"The book I read tells the story of Anthony Kiedis's life, the sing of The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Anthony Kiedis's Scar Tissue renders a picture of the life of Anthony Kiedis with its successes, failures, and renewals.
Anthony Kiedis used drugs for years and truly wanted to quit during the later years of use as he saw what the drugs did to him the next day and what the drugs did to those around him. Anthony Kiedis lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan until he was 13 and moved to Los Angeles, California. Anthony's drug life began while living with his dad. Anthony met the original line-up of The Red Hot Chili Peppers as he went through school. The band began after everyone graduated out of high school. With a surrounding of drugs, Anthony clung to his sanity as he switched drugs to keep from becoming completely useless. The band went through the years with band mates leaving and rejoining. Anthony's life changed drastically as he committed to sobriety after the dead of guitarist Hillel. Anthony, though tempted after every show, kept himself sober to this day even with the constant use around him as he toured and lived in Los Angeles.
Scar Tissue pulled me into Anthony Kiedis's past. The book should be a great book for fans of The Red Hot Chili Peppers or anyone who wants into the life of an ex-drug addict."
"I love all the people that disliked this book because Kiedis came off as pretentious. He's a rock star! He'd be boring if he didn't come off as over-the-top and this book wouldn't be worth reading. The day our rock stars stop bragging about all the women they've slept with, or trying to either a) score drugs or b) stay clean, is the day we no longer have a rock genre. Seriously, what did you expect when you picked up a book by the lead singer of RHCP?
While it can be grating after awhile reading about how Kiedis moves from one high to the next, gets clean and then gets high again, he can't change the fact that he lived that life. He writes about it here (or dictates more likely, but that's not the point) and takes the reader through each up and down of his addiction. There's also a little bit about the music, but its mostly about the drugs and women. It was entertaining to read about Kiedis' adventures on the Sunset Strip as a kid with his dad and how he got hooked up with the other members of the band.
If you're a fan of RHCP, this is certainly a worthwhile book."
"Dear Anthony, I really wanted to learn to love you as a person as much as I love you as a musician. The Chili Peppers have written the soundtrack to many wonderful memories in my life. However, your excruciatingly detailed passages of doing blow or getting blown didn't set well with me, considering your supposed state of total oblivion. I felt many episodes were hyperbolic at best, as your ability to remember minute details of groupies didn't ring true. I found the beginning chapters, with the details about your highly dysfunctional family life, very entertaining, and unlike some reviewers, I didn't find your talk of recovery too "new age-y" but sincere. However, they way you treated your girlfriends, even by your own admission, and then flippantly blamed it on drug abuse, got old. I'll still buy your albums and I'm still a fan of your music, but I don't feel like you are the cool guy I once thought you were. Sorry dude! As far as the actual writing----Writing style is chatty, probably ghost written, and for the genre about average."
