About this title: A biography of French pilot Louis Bleriot who, in 1909, became the first person to fly an airplane across the English Channel. This picture book tells of the very first time Bleriot saw an airship, his quest to build his own flying machine, his many disastrous attempts to learn how to fly a plane, and finally of his triumphant flight into history. Color illustrations accompany the text. Winner of the 1984 Caldecott Medal.

"The Glorious Flight across the Channel with Louis Bleriot was a Caldecott Medal winner. I did not enjoy this story or its illustrations that much. It was about the life of the famous pilot and inventor Louis Bleriot. The illustrations had great detail and dimension to them. The colors and strokes created obvious dimension to the pictures. Although the story was not that intriguing the illustrations did help to liven up the story and portray its importance."
"This is a wonderful tale of a daring flight 100 years ago, and the inspiration and aviation trials that led up to it. The pictures are sepia toned and old fashioned; and as the aircraft improve, you can see the children grow up. The final flight across the English Channel is the culmination of years of effort, daring and invention."
"I didn't know of Bleriot's story before reading this. (My aviation history was limited to the Wright brothers.) The little details about Bleriot's family made this history lesson seem a little more personal. The illustrations seemed a little flat and faded, so I'm a little puzzled by the Caldecott Medal..."
