"I think I would have enjoyed this book more if I hadn't read The Black Swan, but it still has too much of Taleb being arrogant. There is no reason to read both books. The big takeaway is that a lot of what we perceive as success is just the way random occurrences have played themselves out. If you start with a thousand people predicting a coin toss, after 10 tosses you'll have one guy who called them all correctly. That's not skill, it's just luck. You have to look at alternative histories, look at the losers, not just the survivors. Taleb's big weakness is that he attributes it all to luck, without addressing those who are actually skilled.
The best quote in the book: Any statement that can be tested should be tested."
"I was first excited to read Taleb's book after being so enthralled/impressed with his previous work "Black Swan." Though shortly after reading halfway through "Randomness" did I realize that this book was not going to live up to its predecessor. Again, Taleb delivers on the philosophical prose & enlightenment of our time (especially in regards when related human thought & err to trading and behaving a "fool" within the market) but nothing more extraordinary from the message so elegantly delivered in "Black Swan." I found myself saying, "Yes, I agree with, Nassim- good point... now tell me something I don't know," which he seemed to flirt with a bit but not really fully deliver on. Even so, it was a delightful read and I enjoyed it but I still recommend his original landmark piece, "Black Swan", over "Randomness" based on the freshness factor and what you feel you truly get from the text. Overall, not bad."
"Talib is one of the few people that saw the coming economic collapse and actually profited from it, from what I understand. I thought this would give some good insight into why he was able to see this coming and gain some wisdom from him.
The book was good--mostly a trader's view on the randomness of the market and life in general. His thesis is essentially that human beings are not equipped to think rationally about the world and are wired to find patterns where there is only randomness.
I appreciate his insights into explaining how much of what goes on around us is random, though we often attribute explanations to things wrongly.
This is a good read and helps one become willingly to ascribe randomness to aspects of life that might be uncomfortable and uncertainty in appropriate situations.
This is an interesting book since Talib comes off as an atheist, though I've read he's a practicing Christian (though not likely evangelical). A Christian should not see randomness everywhere, but providence. A Christian can learn much here though. Talib helps us see that we ought not be so certain about many things we are certain about. We don't know as much as we think we do. This is a helpful thing to be reminded of."
"Taleb is a professional trader, fund manager, and mathematics professor. He considers in this book what randomness means in the business world, and in life in general. One primary thesis is that we too often mistake dumb luck for skill - more things are explained or justified by randomness than we might be willing to admit. He explains theories and techniques like Monte Carlo math and analyzes the implications of Russian roulette-type scenarios.
Interesting material, but it didn't flow very well for me. The author says in the into that he refused to have a professional editor change the book, and it shows. And there were some claims that were not persuasive to me - the arguments didn't justify the conclusion. But there's good stuff to think about here nonetheless."
