"This book was a surprisingly good read. Since I had watched most if not all of the 'Monday Night War' as it happened it was interesting to get a 'behind the scenes' look at what was really going on as two companies waged a ratings war. However, even though it lets the reader in on what was going on behind the curtain, there were several things omitted from it as to what occurred in front of the camera. As I read it I found several things that were missing that lead to some of the incidents mentioned. All in all it was an interesting bit of history into the world of wrestling aka 'sports entertainment'."
"Ok this book is for the die hard only. if you even knew what the hell the wcw was and you didnt google it and was mighty curious on what happened. Read this book. Beware the writer thinks is is a very funny fellow... he isent."
"A biography of the entire World Championship Wrestling federation, from its split with NWA (not the rap group) to its pitiful demise.
Yes, I'm giving it five stars, but I'm doing so as a wrestling fan. If you're not a fan then I bet you're not interested in this book (then how did you find this page?).
As a wrestling fan, this book is consistently in-depth about all the aspects of the business without getting boring or sidetracked. Neilsen ratings and pay-per-view buyrates get tedious a bit, but they're evidence of the rise and fall of the business, a clear picture of how the company was doing, bottom line wise, at any point in its history.
What I enjoy especially about this book is how insightful it is about the creative aspect of wrestling shows. Reynolds and Bryan Alvarez (co-writer) are long-time fans, so it's a given that they'll be able to turn a critical eye to some of the bigger storylines and matches during WCW's lifetime that shaped it, for good or bad.
But what I appreciate about that is, as a wannabe writer, I find the book to be a good introduction to how to write long-term storylines. What was done or not done in WCW carries lessons that could be applied to TV shows or comic books. How to properly build a major confrontation, or carry a long-term story without it growing stale, or knowing when to pull the trigger on a plot that isn't going anywhere.
I honestly wish the writers of Heroes had read this book before they started writing season 2..."
"This book does a great job of going into detail on why WCW failed, but also keeping things light. I loved this book, it's a must-read for any fan of wrestling in the 90s."
