"After having been across four cities over the past year, this book refreshed my perspective on the need to plug in to the local church. The second and fifth chapters, "He Still Calls Her His Bride" and "Choosing Your Church," were especially helpful. I need to know the 'why' and the 'what to do with it.' Harris delivered these well.
The tough part isn't reading these 90 pages, but putting the thoughts to work. Which church in my area do I belong in? How can I plug in there starting now? These are the questions I still have to wrestle with. If anything, reading this book made the apparent stakes higher."
"A marvelous book for anyone who is looking for an excellent Christian church to join or wondering if the church they are in is where God wants them to grow in! It really challenges us to not be consumer-driven, but focus on God/Jesus and the biblical qualities a church should have. It reminds us that the church should be our #1 passion, instead of some other extracurricular activity. Which means that is where we should spend most of our time at: whether it be getting to know the members, serving, etc. I read an excerpt of this book also at my Church 101 (membership) class.
Notes for myself: My favorite quote is "Do you want to know that your new life is real?" asks Mark Dever. "Commit yourself to a local group of saved sinners. Try to love them. Don't just do it for three weeks. Don't just do it for six months. Do it for years. And I think you'll find out, and others will, too, whether or not you love God. The truth will show itself." (P. 57) How? You may ask... 1) You join. 2) You make the local church a priority. 3) You try to make your pastor's job a joy. 4) You find ways to serve. 5) You give. 6) You connect with people. 7) You share your passion."
