"Recommended for grades 7 and up, Private Peaceful tells the story of Thomas Peaceful, an English teen during World War I who was too young to fight, but lied about his age to join the war effort. It is haunting the way this book draws the reader into Thomas's life both before and during World War I. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn about his early years, his relationships with his family, his motivations. In the end we see just how devastating the war was on Thomas's friends and family.
There is definitely an unexpected twist in the story, and it leaves you feeling sad. I don't want to go into more detail than that because I don't want to spoil the story (the twist is not what you might expect from a war book). Private Peaceful is an interesting read, but not really a feel-good one. I'd recommend it for the valuable reminder it gives us of the devastating effects of war, and as a memorial to those who gave up their childhood and their lives in World War I."
"When I discover a new author whom I find a good read I often search out other books by that same person. This one and the previous one I read Kensuke's Kingdom were the ones by this author with the most acclaim. This one carries a strong message that not everyone in positions of power are wise or generous. Two brothers forced into WWI at a very young age of 17 or less, find friends and foes in their company. but their love for their own family and for their friends helps carry them through some challenging times. It is written without a page turning power that holds one's attention through the end."
I am reading the book Private Peaceful for my intervention class. I am not yet finished reading it but it's a great book of a young boy growing up on the country side. It starts out that he is at the war and as every chapter passes he says something about the current moment and remembers his whole life for the rest of the chapter. His childhood just keeps going on and years pass until when he is recruited to the army. He remembers the days he has spent and the horrible battles he had fought. He has gone through many things but might have something big coming up.
Based upon what I've read so far, I have not yet been disappointed or bored. You are always reading and just wondering whats going to go on next. Also for me I had the anticipation for him to finally grow up and go to the war. He starts remembering his life from when he 1st goes to school until where he currently is. So the anticipation builds through his life to where he finally goes to the army.
I would recommend this book to just about anybody. It has a good solid story with all kinds of topics. If you are into the whole war thing like me it is good since it builds up to that moment. It has some somewhat love story kinda going on in this book. It also gets you wondering how it would have been to grow up back in the early 1900's. So I highly recommend this book since I don't necessarily like reading and I loved he book so if you got some time read this book."
"This was one of the first books I read and I was truely amazed by how much you can link together in one book and how many times you can say something that is taken so flipantely but only chapters later so discover it was such a crutial part of the book. Besides the brave faces and the hidden truth, the curage and cowardice and the reality of what I am sure many men had to go through in the war from Private Peaceful there are so many twists and unexpectful happenings that althought they confuse the reader they make you want to keep reading and not stop. I know I have read books that consist of unbelievable scenes and characters with clearly transparent plots but this book although I think I am right in saying fiction in has such a sense of human emotion and a pure nature to it that sets it aside from so many other books as you could believe every word although in some parts of the book you mite not want to. I do strongly believe that Michael Morpurgo is a genius and this is the only book I have read of his but believe me when I it is deffinitely more than enough to make me want to read more of his work."
