"This is a gorgeous coffee table book that also will be read with pleasure. Beautifully produced, with many full-page color illustrations, the three sections focus on traditional knowledge, voicing history, and contemporary life and identities. All the commentary is written by Native American scholars, artists, and storytellers. Names you may recognize include Sherman Alexie, Louise Erdrich, Linda Hogan, Wilma Mankiller, and M. Scott Momaday. I also was pleased to discover a number of wonderful writers whose work I did not know before.
Many nations are represented, from Ojibwe to the north to Maya to the south, from Coeur d’Alene to the west to Seneca in the east. Throughout, period art and photographs illustrate the life and culture of the nations represented.
Every time I open this book I discover new beauty and understanding. I recommend this to general readers, as well as to students of Native American cultures. The book was published in 2004 by National Geographic and the Smithsonian to commemorate the opening of the new National Museum of the American Indian on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. After reading Native Universe I will certainly visit the museum on my next trip, prepared to savor the treasures within."
