"In the second Tintin adventure, Tintin in the Congo, we again join the young reporter as he travels abroad, in search of stories and a good bit of hunting.
As with the first Tintin story, Tintin in the Land of the Soviets, this work shows how dramatically and drastically Herge's work developed and changed over time. These two earliest books show a rougher, more cartoonish style, as well as more simplistic writing.
Tintin in the Congo isn't recognized as part of the main canon, as in this early Herge work Tintin portrays many Colonialist/Imperialist/Paternalist attitudes of the (then) times. It additionally falls prey to ethnic stereotyping--showing the native Congolese as simple, lazy, superstitious and childlike, dependent upon help and guidance of 'white masters'.
Whew! So once you realize that this book in particular, and perhaps all of Herge's first three books must be read in context of the times from which they came, you're over the worst of the culture shock. Well, not quite, but at least you're better prepared.
I've never been a proponent of 'disappearing' books that are examples of earlier, ugly portrayals of minorities or the historical attitudes out of which they were produced. I think these books have a lot to teach us about our not so distant past--and some can even be enjoyable despite the now jarring ethnic 'off-notes,' the flat-out superiority complex of white-meets-anything-else.
The story is far more of an outlandish big-hunt adventure with some fairly improbable run-ins and stalkings of typically two-dimensional bad-guys.
There's a lot more bloodshed in the first two early Tintin stories--and though in black and white, it's more than one sees in the rest of the later books, as is the killing of big game animals. Tintin's edges are still a bit sharp in the early works, softened by later stories into a more G-rated hero.
Snowy gets quite a bit of story-line as well. His character took shape much more quickly and remained more solidly so than Tintin's. Snowy gets to save the day a few times and also be famously cowardly a few times too. He's very much himself, and strongly so.
Much more of a silly story than a gripping adventure, the Tintin in the Congo version I read was an unaltered, un-colorized version. I'd enjoy to see how a later, updated version reads in comparison to this facsimile. It would be interesting to see what changes Herge made, both in story content and in visual style."
"I love Tintin's books. I grew up reading and re-reading them so they are part of my childhood, my education, my cultural backgrownd. Some are better than others, funnier than others or even scarier than others. But they are all worthwhile visiting and re-visiting as the author (or editor) says "from ages 7 to 77"."
