"I have the First Edition May 1998 First Printing book and have used it on nearly every trip and every hike I have taken in the PNW. It is not comprehensive but provides the essentials that gives you the tools if you need to do further research. Great photography and nicely written. ANother book that I have read front to back multiple times just because it was so fun and so varied."
"This field guide covers it all: bugs, fish, birds, mammals, flower, you name it, if it lives in the Pacific Northwest (and isn't too obscure), it's in here! This guide also includes maps and information about national parks and nature reserves. Highly recommended!"
"I had to consult this book today to discover which species a pair of birds I encountered, yesterday. I was walking all over town looking for a bike (impulse bought a stupid one) and something hit me in the back of the head. I ducked and saw the shadow of a bird fly off of my head and circle up to a light post above me. I was puzzled, wondering if the collision had been an accident (was the bird feeling sheepish?) but then as I turned to walk away, its mate lifted off and dive-bombed my head! I'm not kidding! So then I screamed and quickly walked away while swinging my black patent leather purse around my head in a circular motion, looking like a ninny to whoever was driving by at the moment.
My friend Colin insists that I told him it was a crow. I didn't. I said a black bird. After consulting my Audobon Society guide, I can securely say that it's a Brewer's Blackbird. It says they nest in small colonies, helping each other protect their nests! They were working in teams!
Animals will f*** you up!
--------------------------
I bought this when I was at Crater Lake. One morning in the tent, Henry and Lily asked me to tell them a story. Usually, they want to hear AGAIN about when my friend Amy peed her pants in 4th grade and I started screaming "SHUT UP! SHUT UP!" when people were laughing at her. I get tired of telling that story, and I had just been reading this book, so instead I told them about insects and the various things they do with their eggs. They were enchanted and kept asking for more. Truth is stranger than fiction."
"When working for washington State Parks, I found this to be the best field guide in the most user friendly format. It is easy to carry, and gives descriptions of plants, animals, and birds all in one guide. Good stuff."
