About this title: "Everyday Blessings" offers an alternative to parental disapproval as a means of influencing children's behavior. The authors make a convincing case for what they call "mindful parenting," a Zen-like approach built upon "moment-to-moment non-judgemental awareness." Looking beyond our own judgements and reactions allows us to experience children of any age almost as Zen masters who, through their natural openness, can show parents how to live in the present.

"This is a book that I keep on my bookshelf, and pull out from time to time when I feel like I'm losing my patience. Some of it's a little too softy for me, but a lot of it is good and reminds me to be in the moment with my kids, even when (and especially when) they are crying, whining, etc. Reading it now so I will get some of my patience back with kid #2."
"This book is a wonderful addition to a parenting library. I find the whole thing hard, hard work for me (mindfulness in general, mindfulness in parenting), but something about their writing (Jon and his wife Myla) really speaks to me.
I first read this book long ago (guessing when) and then re-read it this past summer after attending a workshop with JKZ (where Myla was attending as well). It was a treat just to be in their presence."
"This book is my Bible for parenting. I go back to it again and again, and it brings me to center every time. It reminds me who I want to be as a parent and as a human being for my daughter. When things are crazy or I'm feeling a little overtaxed, it reminds me about the inner-commitments I've made to my child to do the very best for her I know how. It also reaffirms choices I'm making for her in the vein of attachment parenting, which isn't the most common choice in parenting these days.
The only caveat I would express is that if you're new to mindfulness and meditation, it may be a bit too matter of fact. You may find yourself saying,"But how do I do that?"
Still, it challenges you as parent to be more present, to keep your eye on the ball so to speak. It also provides some wonderful encouragement to steer clear of mainstream marketing and media images, especially to young girls. For some, it may be a bit too much reality. But if you're open to it, it's as real as you can get.
I will continue to read this until it falls apart and I have to buy a new one."
