"I would like to give this book 4.5 stars, so I'll curve up.
We use the 7th Edition in our undergrad entomology lab as the text book for each student, but use a separate text for the lecture. This book is fairly good for keying most Insecta down to family. The majority of this book is dedicated toward that purpose, along with some general sections on physiology and collecting, preserving and mounting. This is not a book for those looking for color plates or details about a taxon's ecology. - If you are trying to key an insect down to subfamily, genus, or species, this is not the book for you. However, to cover the breadth of Insecta to genus would require an encyclopedia set for North America alone. This book can get you down to family and many online resources can get you to genus once you have identified the particular family. -
My only true gripe is more of a wish. I wish they would publish this book in spiral-bound paperback. That format works well in lab setting for sitting flat on a bench and only taking up half the room. It would also reduce the weight of the text for the students and fit better into packs, although perhaps not with the longevity. -
On a final note that is obvious for many (-my apologies), keying many insects down to this level requires a decent binocular stereoscope to see the features indicated in the text."
