"The plot of "The Galileo Affair" (4th or 5th or something in the 1632 series) follows the USE embassy to Venice, where Tom "Stoner" Stone's sons find themselves quickly involved with the local "Committee of Correspondence" and without really intending to find that they're planning a raid to rescue Galileo from the clutches of the Inquisition. Whether he needs it or not. While I find the whole 1632 series pretty dense with politics and huge numbers of minor (if historically major) characters and occasionally hard to wade through, I cannot deny that they're amazingly educational - especially to someone who apparently didn't absorb much European history back in high school. I especially appreciated that this story shed a great deal of light on the intricacies of the historical Galileo conflict and exploded the myth that the Catholic church was after him purely because they were a bunch of backward, anti-scientific ignoramuses with an inadequate understanding of Scripture and a power structure to protect. The real issues were considerably more subtle, and had a great deal to do with the fact that (a) Galileo could not really prove his theories, and (b) was nevertheless a real jerk about it, seemingly going out of his way to pick fights with other astronomers who probably even agreed with him and also insulting the Pope pretty blatantly in his book. In addition, "The Galileo Affair" contains quite a bit more action and adventure than earlier books in the series, and I found it a more engaging read."
"I read the first in the series: 1632 and liked it, but I just couldn't get into this book. There wasn't much of a plot and any historical information was buried in too many words."
"Possibly the funniest of the 1632 series, this one deals with the chaos swirling around the Church's trial of Galileo ... and the efforts of a half-assed bunch of revolutionaries and their American teenaged friends to stop it."
