"Unlike Eric who tries to pass off books on tape as books he has read, I will provide total transparency. And unlike his godhead Obama, when I promise transparency, I will actually deliver it.
This is a book on tape. I did not read it, I listened to it, so it doesn't really count. It was interesting. I now find myself trying to pronounce Greek names in the same distinctive way the narrator does. "Leotychidas."
30 years after defeating mighty Athens in the Peloponnesian War (itself 30 years long), Sparta was itself defeated, and swiftly declined, never to be a power again. But the century of Spartan greatness, from its history-shaping heroics at the Hot Gates of Thermopylae to its apocalyptic showdown with Athens, left an indelible mark on the consciousness of western civilization, even if it was not a cultural contributor to that civilization as was Athens. Sparta, the most martial of states, had no city walls, until later days when it was a supplicant to Rome. There is no Acropolis for moderns to marvel upon. Just the memory of 300 warriors who changed world history.
P.S. Eric, you would love this book, as it can be listened to rather than read."
"As so often happens, the cover art is contradicted by the contents. Bizarrely, this is one instance where fact-checking can be done by watching 300.
For the reader of many history books, this will not break much ground. But for the casual lover of antiquity, this book should be quite informative. As others have noted, the structure is annoying. Does anyone know whether the print version featured boxes and illustrations?
The narration is clear and not memorable. This is a good thing."
