About this title: The title novella tells the story of a young man in Montana, his errant brother, and their father (a minister like MacLean's own father) who taught his sons fly fishing. The other stories in the collection are "USFS 1919: The Ranger, the Cook, and a Hole in the Sky," a coming-of-age tale set in the mountains of Montana, and "Logging and Pimping and 'Your Pal, Jim'," about a logging camp. Written when MacLean was in his 70s, these three vivid autobiographical tales comprise his first work of fiction.

"This is a story of two boys who grow up with the authority of a Presbyterian Minister. They were given the same instruction as children growing up and turned out so different. One was a daredevil determined to challenge the world. The other became a writer and reflective. The two of them could not have been any different.
This novel shares how each of us have a built in path that has to be followed. It is the destiny of us all to fulfill and express our own uniqueness in the world. And yet, there was a tie that bound the two of these boys beyond their family ties. Both of them loved to fish. It was the one thing they loved to do together.
This bond created a depth to their relationship enabeling a love that was unconditional in nature and allowed their different natures to blend into a unity that could not be explained. It could only be lived and expressed through this simple act of creating a world they both could live in "a river runs through it."

"While I am not normally a fan of any author classified as a "regional writer" or a "western writer," this was fantastic. I had almost forgotten the pleasure of a wonderfully crafted, recently written novel. Just remarkable, fantastic, lovely.
I think that part of what I enjoyed about this book was that it evoked for me a very specific image of the American West that I grew up in, even though I was only tangential to it; it rang true enough that I wanted to keep reading and was strange enough that I wanted to keep reading. This is one classic that absolutely deserves the name."
"This book made we want to move to Montana and learn how to fly fish. Maclean's descriptions of the beautiful country side in Montana makes you feel like you are there and more than that, makes you wish you were there.
The book is an autobiography about the relationship between a minister and his two sons. Norman, the author, is the older and more grounded son, while younger son Paul is a rowdy journalist. The boys go through a lot of tough times and good times, but Paul gets involved in gambling and utlimately goes too far. I love this book and would recommend it to anyone."
"Of the three stories included here, I only read the title story (actually more a novella at 100+ pages) because I enjoyed the movie of the same name. The movie closely follows the story's plot line, but I thought Redford's direction actually added quite a bit to Maclean's lean style. I enjoyed the author's Scottish wit, but the story did not always flow smoothly.
An interesting sidenote: the cryptic ending words of the movie are taken directly from the last two paragraphs of the story. I love the poetry, but it also felt strangely out of place compared to the rest of the story."
