"This was excellent. I listed to the audio version of this book and at the end they had two of the actual members of this amazing band of heros. I immediately went out and bought this for my father."
"This is a well-researched, thorough account of the all black 761st Tank Battalian. It covers their training and their unique place in the war in Europe. The bulk of the book covers their nine months in near continuous combat, which for me became a blur of places, names, facts & figures. This was obviously a labor of love for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who is an intelligent, well-spoken person when I've seen him interviewed, as opposed to the overpaid, obnoxious, egomaniac morons that seem to be the norm in professional sports nowadays. Recommended for someone already interested in the subject."
"Wow! Great book written by Kareem Abdul Jabbar of basketball fame about a black tank battalion in WWII. If you saw the movie "Tuskegee Airman," this is the tank version and it is terrific. A moving true story that will make you shake your head that african americans could or would ever be treated the way they were and yet they rose above it to fight for the USA and were heroes in every sense of the word!"
"Sometimes we assume the talent especially extreme talent in a subject such as sports is limited to sports. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with the help of Anthony Walton has written one of the best books about World War II I have ever read! It puts you in the time and place without the over dramatization and cloudy nostalgia that usually accompanies post war "untold stories". It gives a clear and unfettered picture of war time for the 761st Tank Battalion. War at best is nightmarish but for this group of men and others like them it was nightmarish and desolate. This book if one of my all time favorite reads!"
