"This was one of the first books someone gave me when I decided to go vegetarian almost seven years ago. Luckily, it was not the only book, or I might have given up and gone back to being an omnivore. As part of a collection, this book is useful. As the solo introduction to vegetarian food, I think it is inadequate. While there are several recipes from this book that have made it onto my regular meal-planning rotation, I have found that when a recipe from this book is a miss, it is REALLY a miss. Once I was making a salad for a holiday from this book and the dressing was so wretched that I washed the entire thing in a sieve, and went out and bought a bottle of salad dressing from the grocery store. Another time one of the pizzas turned out so salty it was almost inedible. I realize that most cookbooks are a combination of great and not-so-great recipes, but when the misses are so marked, it makes me a little nervous to try anything new from the book."
"This books makes vegetarianism easy and accessible. Full of fun, friendly facts, and more consistently excellent recipes than any other I've found. From meat-like recipes like "nearly normal" shepherd's pie, to standard meatless faves like potato soup (yum yum yum), to full on veggie deliciousness -- roasted veggie marinades-- and wonderful desserts like homemade fruit sorbet and super easy chocolate mousse, this book has many full on meals and treats for everyone. Also indicated where recipes are vegan or able to be vegan-adapted. Highly, highly recommended."
