About this title: In the 1970s, Calvin Trillin informed us that the most glorious food in an American city was not to be found at the pretentious rooftop restaurant he called La Maison de la Casa House, Continental Cuisine. With three hilarious books, he established himself as "our funniest food writer" and, in Craig Claiborne's phrase, "the Walt Whitman of American eats." Now the three books have been combined in what Trillin calls "The Tummy Trilogy."

"Trillin's dry sense of humor makes this book about his culinary adventures a pleasure to read. If a little long, the writing itself appears effortless. His ability to laugh at himself and his awareness of his own peculiarities when it comes to food are what makes this book such a joy to read. He also rewards the attentive reader with jokes. I read many chapters with a smile on my face.
As a side note, the book is noteworthy not only because it was written before America's gastronomic revolution, as some call it, but also because it was written with a real love of the entire country. Trillin, a native Midwesterner who makes Greenwich Village his home, seems comfortable anywhere. In our highly partisan current reality, where political candidates talk about "the real America", it would seem that Trillin's America, where he has an appreciation for the food purveyors in Chinatown, the feasts served at New England church dinners and the fried chicken in Kansas, has been lost."
