About this title: Noah's wife begins his story, revealing that her ancient husband (there's a 500-year age difference) is distant, domineering, and downright unpleasant. When he gets the call from God to build an ark and save humanity from the coming flood, the family reacts in a variety of ways, and the narrative bounces back and forth between them. It's his sons, of course, who have to do the work of shipbuilding, and it's his disgruntled daughters-in-law who have to track down all the animal species and herd them into the ark. Then there's the ordeal of living in close quarters with the animals, all of whom ...

"This is vaguely reminiscent of The Red Tent in that it takes a few scenes and characters from the Bible and imaginatively fleshes out their stories. But it's much more witty and wry than The Red Tent, and the language is mostly modern and casual. In case you're worried that this will be preachy Christian fiction, relax. There is plenty of "rutting," including a particularly humorous scene involving a boar. Now I'm afraid I've said too much. With so many wonderful voices, I suspect the audio book may better than the printed version."
"A delightful retelling of the biblical story of Noah & the Flood. Unlike, say, The Red Tent, which appears to stick pretty close to the biblical account but makes subtle (& not so subtle) changes to impose a New Age, feminist, spirituality on the biblical story, this one goes off in some wildly imaginative ways--fleshing out the characters of Noah's daughters-in-law, for example--but somehow seems to me to be more faithful to the primary themes of the original text. It's also pretty funny."
"There is a difference between "best" and "favorite". Sometimes your favorite is a first of something. Sometimes the best is the most thrilling. This is not the best novel, very much it is not. But it might be my favorite.
The book portrays Noah (Noe) in what would be "realistic" (in the way he treats women, his children, as per the period). The biblical tones are certainly a part of the novel but historical and emotional bonds take the precedent.
The book is written in chapters by different narrators, one of which is Mirn, a daughter-in-law of Noe. She is adorable and might be my favorite character of all time.
Whether you do your rosaries every morning or don't know a kippah from a Kia, read this book! Even if David Maine might be nuts."
"Re-telling of the story of Noah, which I thought might be interesting, but I couldn't get past the violence towards women in the first two chapters. Probably historically accurate, but I don't want to read it."
