About this title: When the author's wife was posted to the small island nation of Kiribati in the South Pacific, their culture shock was extreme. Expecting a Gauguin-esque paradise, they actually found a hot, filthy, polluted, isolated, and forgotten place with almost no amenities. After two years of battling bureaucracy and, often, simply trying to find something ...

Description: Very Good. 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" Tall. Upon earning his master's degree, Maarten Troost found himself among the highly educated sort routinely described by temp agencies as having "no skills. " So, when his slightly more ambitious girlfriend, Sylvia, was offered a government job on the distant Pacific atoll of Tarawa, the "buoyantly optimistic" duo jumped at the opportunity to play modern-day Robinson Crusoe. read more

"Troost has a very entertaining way of retelling his few years on an atoll in the South Pacific. The humor is truly laugh-out-loud funny. I have read it more than a few times, highly recommended."
"To Mr.Troost, I learned that you are a liar and a disgraceful man, and my opinion about you lay on the beaches of Tarawa. You wrote about my culture, my people and my island I dearly love so you can be famous and rich!!! The title is a scheme and a trick to get people's attention so they can buy your book. The book was given to me because I refused to buy it. I was on the island in 1997 and I didn't remember the LaMacarena and the beer crisis. You got a sick mind. Temawa (rest her soul)was my best friend and cousin, and Faroug (deported to Africa) at FSP and what you said about them were not true!!!!.You make me sick. I agree that you are not good with names(two years wait before you wrote this book is a long time for your brain) but disagreed that you tried to protect the people's identity. You should be sued. You are cruel and insensitive to get a laugh out of an innocent culture so you can be useful and most of all get rich so you can supplement your pathetic past. I hope that is not the case but Mr. Troost YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF. For those who are contributing to troost'S pocket, beware your beloved home land could be next or maybe its too late since he's already written several more books."
"The Sex Lives of Cannibals is one of the best books I've read in years and the only one that I can recall that I wanted to buy for or recommend to friends. Normally I don't read much non-fiction and have never read a travel memoir, but I picked Troost's book up after an Amazon Vine Reviewer compared the opening chapter of my debut novel, Proof of Nature's Splendid Diversity, which I'd submitted to the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award, to Troost's popular book.
Clearly, not everyone is going to "get" Troost's purpose or humor. This isn't a travel guide for those searching for some off-the-beaten-path island. This is about a smart, highly educated man finally growing up by spending two years in a world where there is true deprivation. His viewpoint and experiences, at least from where I'm sitting, are refreshingly different. His writing is self-deprecating (something some readers won't see) and his growth as the narrator-character of his own story is subtle. By the end of the memoir, Troost has been changed by his time on Tarawa. Although he and his girlfriend Sylvia can't bring themselves to turn into "Half-Dead Fred," they find that they can't look upon life in the U.S. with the same eyes. No one needs to live on an atoll at the edge of the world to do this, but the fact is that Troost and his girlfriend stay through her contract, something that her humorless predecessor couldn't do."
"This is the kind of book that as I was reading, and laughing out loud, I just had to share with everyone around me. I read passages to my husband, told bits and pieces to my kids and just plain enjoyed the book start to finish. It was a quick and easy read - but beneath the surface - and without being preachy - there were many international issues discussed.
Sylvia and her boyfriend Maarten agree to go to the remote atoll country of Karibati pretty much in the middle of nowhere in the Equatorial Pacific. Dreams of lazy days, beautiful sunsets and an idyllic island paradise give way to the reality of sewage issues, lack of water, intermittent electricity and every class of critter and parasite under the sun! Their living conditions go from deplorable to tolerable to actually quite livable and in that ensuing time frame of two years Maarten is able to get through the roughest of times through the use of humor.
I liked this so much I've turned it into a bookring!"
