Their surface area of 95,000 square miles is greater than New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island combined. People who have never ...

"I started reading this book as it's one of the two finalists for our 2010 Community Reads book. I was very pleasantly surprised at how readable it was. I've found in the past that many of our Community Reads books are very dry and hard to get through but with this one, I had the opposite reaction. I actually found it hard to put this one down to do my homework!
The author provides a wonderful blend of memoir from his time as a crew member on the "Malabar" with historical and scientific information about the Great Lakes. It was very informative and yet a very engaging read with the included memoir sections."
"While reading this book I discovered a friend was in it, one Carleen and I visited when we went to the Great Lakes State Games in Marquette, so I called and congratulated him on his 15 minutes of fame. He said he was also in two other books by the author and had gone on a trip with him canoeing the rivers of Michigan. Neat! Also turns out I sailed on this ship before it was retired, with my friends Hong Jun and Najin, and have a picture of us on the deck of the Malibar. Hong Jun was seasick and stayed down below most of the time. It was a going away present for her because she was leaving to go to California. Ooops! The book is a fun journey from TC to the east coast and was loaded with interesting information about each Great Lake and about the islands we see from Cross Village."
