"Another Maisie Dodd mystery and even better than the first. I hope Jacqueline Winspear continues to write these mysteries. Maisie struggles with her past, including her role as a nurse in WWI to become a boss and investigator with feeling. She trusts her intuition to solve problems and follows up on her hunches. She struggles with the divide between her educated self and her childhood life based in poverty and working "in service" as a young girl. She learns to forgive her father for sending her away. Communication is her road to a less lonely life with richer human interactions. There were many levels in this book that made it such a good read."
"These mysteries combine historical fiction and conventional mystery genres well. Maisie is a girl from the working classes forced to work as a maid in an aristocratic household. How she becomes an educated, supernaturally medium- like "detective" is part of the first story. The setting of the mysteries is the 30's, but flashbacks fill in Maisie's past, with good historical scenes of her experience as a nurse on the front lines during World War I. Both mysteries hinge on historical details. These clean, positive mysteries teach about both eras without pain and bring up moral issues and psychological truths worth talking about. They are British, so they may be too slow for some readers, but the characters should pull in most mystery or history fans."
"As I expected, I didn't like this book as much as the first in the series, Maisie Dobbs. This is because the part I liked best about the first book was the middle section, which was a flashback to the first world war, ten years before the setting of the rest of the book. Naturally in the second book the author couldn't continue to flash back to the war (although it is referred to often) so I didn't enjoy it as much.
I also was very frustrated with the character of Maisie Dobbs. She takes offense easily, and does not seem like a very warm person. And as another Goodreads reviewer pointed out, she very pointedly eats very little.
On the other hand, I enjoyed the setting of London in the 1920s, and I enjoyed the mystery. I'm sure I'll read the next book in the series, in spite of my frustrations."
"A mystery reading friend has been telling me to read this series and since I have not been terribly interested in period novels, had not taken her up on the suggestion.
In April, I was visiting her in MN and in one of our favorite mystery book shops. There was a hardback at a great price so I picked it up and have been hooked since that time. Birds of a Feather was another great read and the historical info on post WWI in England makes this series all the more interesting. Maisie is a woman ahead of her time and Ms. Winspear's character devlopment as well as Maise's method for solving the crime is unique.
Please give this series a try!"
