"I enjoyed this book. A lot of great photos. This book was written by the editors of Bicycling Magazine and I think that influenced the layout of the book. Lots of inserts that appear in the body of the main text. This can work for a magazine, but in a book, especially a book that was designed to be short for its width, this format is annoying. You turn a page and come to an insert, but you don't realize its an insert because the page is so short. My main complaint of the book (same for the magazine) is that they spend too much time on the sport aspect of bicycling (racing, racing and some more racing). The "bicycle as utility" section was tiny and mainly showed pictures of Chinese peasants. One example had a caption that, ironically, still managed to reference the Tour de France. When bicycle messengers were mentioned, it was in the context of a bicycle messenger competition! I wanted to see and read about regular people using their bikes for utility, not just how there have been units of the police or the military on bicycles. The book is called the "Noblest Invention." That is apt, because this invention, which, a 120 years on, we now take for granted, was the sought after "clockwork horse." This allowed people who could not afford to keep an animal for transportation or as beasts of burden to still travel and move goods, cheaply and effectively. The activity of riding a bicycle helped break social barriers for women. Bicycle designers and mechanics were the ones that developed/invented autos and airplanes. The bicycle is not the "noblest invention" because we are able to ride it in a race."
"Here it is. Some more info on the recent history of the bicycle; the stuff alluded to in The Bicycle: A History. This book, however, is less a history than a paen to the bicycle. It includes historical information and notes on famous figures in the competitive cycling world, but much of the content is made up of photographs and quotes about bicycles and some prose shading towards the purple. It's a nice read."
