"i can honestly say that reading this work has changed my life. this particular translation of the ancient indian epic is a quite simply, a masterful one. ramesh menon has managed to capture the spirit of the work while expressing it in a language that is both modernly accessible and relatable, while keeping the integrity of the original text intact. he presents it in a modern, colloquial language that makes you feel as if you are actually there, participating and experiencing the events and emotions of the characters, even though those events are seemingly fantastical and "ancient" from a modern perspective. the story itself is a welcome narrative that outlines human values that are, sadly, far from popularly expressed in modern culture: duty, honor, sacrifice, fidelity, principle, responsibility, chastity in the face of abandoned temptation, friendship, strength of character, determination in the face of destructiveness ... while maintaining all of the passion and rawness of the timeless human experience. the dynamic between the human endeavor and the supra-natural influences that undeniably interact with our existence is lyrically and instructively captured. maybe the most imposing characteristic of The Ramayana as a work in and of itself, regardless of this particular translation, is the idea constantly reinforced through the narrative, that dedication to rightness and goodness is a virtue that always triumphs in the face of the temptation to abandon doing what's right in order to satisfy personal, and what's almost always erroneous, material satisfaction. if more people read works of this kind, instead of works that are most popular today, that elevate the patently destructive tyranny of the ego over the more difficult yet more personally and universally enlightening path of what The Ramayana constantly refers to as the path of dharma, this currently sad and tragic world would definitely be a different, and much better, place. in another sense, this narrative is the Lord of the Rings, with a lot more sex and violence, written about 3,000 years before Tolkien was even a little squirt."
"This translation is slightly more poetic than the previous one I read, which gives it more of the quality it needs. It is still prose, however, so not very poetic. (Also, the cover is more beautiful - and yes, sometimes I can't help judging...) I love both of them, really. You just can't get enough of the Ramayana."
"To speak blasphemously, this is a 3000 year old fantasy novel complete with magical swords and spells, ancient demons, talking animals and epic armies."
