"I enjoyed this quite a bit. We learned more about Bones, and I thought the characterization was well done. I liked the alien enemy the Enterprise had to deal with, although maybe it was a bit close to "Alien" in some ways. A good solid story. I thought the title was a bit misleading. Bones was having some dreams about the aliens apparently, but this was never developed and never turned out to be important in the story. The ending was strong, though."
"Just how much damage can a ship take and still remain spaceworthy? Even Scotty's remarkable skills are taxed beyond limits in this book. There is also a serious technical fault in having the ship limp back to base at impulse (a trip which took a few hours at warp took only over a week by impulse??!!?? Does the author even know how fast Warp Speed is?)
All in all, barring the technical errors the plot was OK."
"This book was interesting because it gave us a glimpse of Bones as a young man--not a flash back, per se, but as the result of an accident he mentally 'regressed' to when he was just out of medical school, before he joined--or even thought of joining--Star Fleet. Personally, I always liked the episodes where Kirk and Spock were not the "main focus" but the other primary characters were. Scottie, Bones, Sulu--I always wanted MORE stories about them. And this one provides a look at Bone's inner workings, as it were."
