"I'm not a huge fan of the hard-boiled style. I think too often authors fall into cliches trying to out-do the masters, Chandler and Hammett. But I was intrigued by the premise of Philip Kerr's Berlin Noir books--hard-boiled private detective plying his trade in pre-WWII, Nazi-controlled Berlin.
The first of the three books in this volume, March Violets, was a good read, once I got past the extreme overuse of mixed metaphors. Everything in every sentence was like something else, as if Kerr was trying to prove his noir cred by coming up with the most outrageous tough-guy metaphors. Still, the plot was sufficiently complex without being confusing and the vision of Nazi Berlin on the eve of the 1936 Olympiad was fascinating.
I haven't read the other two yet, but I will, even though I'm a bit disappointed that book three on are set in *post-War* Germany. There are lots of mysteries set during and after WWII; I was drawn by the promise of a glimpse at what led up to the war."
