"In this Wallander mystery, South Africa in the early 1990s -- right after Nelson Mandela's release from prison -- serves as a backdrop to a bizarre murder in Sweden.
The small town detective finds himself entwined with South African mercenaries, Boer supremacists, disenfranchised Soviet psycopaths and a proper Methodist real estate couple in this mystery.
The story seems more than a bit of a stretch, but who knows -- maybe Sweden is used as a training ground for Third World assasins...."
"The third in the Kurt Wallander series, and the third for me. Each one of these gets better. 'The Dogs of Riga' not only combined the elements of gripping police procedural and visceral depiction of Wallander's sometimes sordid yet somehow noble life present in 'Faceless Killers,' but also gave insight on the turmoil in the Baltic States as the Soviet Union collapsed. 'The White Lioness' opens a window on South Africa as the power of the Boers wanes, and Mandela comes into power. Indeed, it even features a cameo appearance by Mandela, and F.W. de Klerk plays a critical role. Mankell effortlessly weaves all this in with a murder investigation by Wallender in Sweden, as well as that detective's struggles with alcohol and family, and it works. Just fantastic. Highly recommended."
"A long break with many New Yorker's read...but this book was brutal to get through. I bought it for Dad one summer day when he asked me to get him a book thinking a Swedish (I think they call it Ice Noir or some nonsense?) and then decided to read it. Oy. Not good...not good at all. The mystery is not that mysterious, the drunken lead PI is not charming, or honestly that drunken, and there is barely enugh to keep you going. I think the only reason I actually finished it was to just say I did. Apparently this guy is prolific...and I won't be reading any more of it."
"Henning, dude, if you want to write a book about how it sucks to live in racist South Africa, I'm all for it. But I picked up this book because it was a KURT WALLANDER mystery. Wallander--the SWEDISH policeman, for christsakes...is he really going to foil a plot to assassinate Nelson Mandela? I want to read about SWEDISH police doing SWEDISH things like solving murders in SKANE, drinking coffee and eating sandwiches. If I wanted to read the Ladies Detective series, I would have joined a book club..."
