Despite such discrimination, Anderson's career thrived, particularly in Europe. Later, she became a symbol of the American civil rights movement when she performed a 1939 concert at the Lincoln Memorial where she sang for over 75,000 admirers, including First Lady ...

"This is a great book! It is a great book for teaching students to stand up for what they believe in. It is also great for teaching about the Civil Rights Movement."
"Voice that Challenged A Nation: Maria Anderson and the Struggle for Equal Rights By Russell Freedman Published by Clarion Books, New York 2004 Non Fiction: Biography
Freedman writes a wonderful biography of Marian Anderson and her how her rise as an international performer correlated with events in the civil rights movement. The book begins by setting the scene of Anderson's 1939 Easter Sunday performance at the Lincoln Memorial. It is a wonderful way to begin a biography, knowing that the subject will achieve such greatness in a time where African Americans and Whites were still segregated in many aspects of life. Freedman continues to tell of Anderson's childhood, beginning musical career and her time spent abroad in Europe. The sequence of events comes back to the Easter Sunday contest and continues with her singing career and successes until Anderson's death until 1993. What is exceptional about the book is the links that the author provides to what is going on in national politics and Anderson's career. While I would say the book predominately focuses on her successes and trials Anderson under went as a singer, a lot of attention is given to the fact that she was an African American accomplishing this, at a time when theatre seating, hotels, trains, and bathrooms were still segregated. When Marian was struggling to find a place in the United States as a singer, she decided to hone her craft in Europe, where performers were often booked more on their talent then their skin color. I was always amazed at how hard Marian worked. Though she was gifted with a beautiful voice, she did not rest on her laurels and strove to be her best at every moment throughout her career. When the DAR refused to let Marian perform in Constitution Hall, she took the forefront on the civil rights issue. Eleanor Roosevelt quit the DAR over their refusal to host an African American artist. The concert at the Lincoln Memorial marks an important moment in the civil rights battle. Though Marian shied away from controversy, she continued to pave the way for other African American performing artists. When she did eventually perform at Constitution Hall, to a desegregated audience at her request, Marian said "There was no sense of triumph. I felt it was a beautiful concert hall and I was very happy to sing in it" (75). What makes this book a successful work of non-fiction is it's readability, as well as the balance between two topics in American history: Marian Anderson's life and musical career and the Civil Rights Movement. The pictures are well chosen and display even more what a beautiful , poised and professional artist that Marian Anderson was. It was very important to me to listen to Marian Anderson sing after reading the book and I think any child will appreciate hearing her sing as well."
"This is a wonderful biography of a significant lady in the civil rights movement. Appropriate for upper elementary grade levels it would be a wonderful companion to a history unit on civil rights."
