"This book is for schoolchildren, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. It is a very personal book written by Jackie Robinson's only daughter, and she tells the story of her father (and mother) very well.
The many pictures, including those of hand-written letters, enhance the book's well-written text.
Even though I don't remember his first year in the major leagues (I just turned nine in 1947), I remember well Jackie Robinson playing for the Dodgers. I was a St. Louis Cardinals fan and listened to most of their games on the radio (no TV then), including games against the rival Dodgers, of course. And the first major league game I saw, in St. Louis in 1951, was the Cardinals and the Dodgers. Jackie played in that game.
I had not known that Pee Wee Reece, the All-Star shortstop was one of the white players that especially befriended Jackie. When I lived in Kentucky, I heard some of the old-timers say that Pee Wee's father, who had grown up in Meade County, was even a better ball player than his son. He just never had the same chance to play professionally. When I looked up Pee Wee on Wikipedia just a few minutes ago, I was surprised to find that he is listed as having been born in Ekron, the town where I lived from 1959-1963. It was remarkable that Pee Wee was so supportive of Jackie, for many of the white people around Ekron were still quite prejudiced when we lived there--more than a decade after Pee Wee had first befriended Jackie.
Any baseball fan from twelve years old up--or anyone interested in the struggle of African-Americans for equality--should enjoy this book greatly. I certainly did."
"This book is of course about Jackie Robinson and it goes through his life story. The interesting thing about this story is that his daughter wrote it when she was older, so the reader gets to feel her emotions that she expresses throughtout the book. It is a very good book and has a lot of great information about the great baseball player!!"
"Written by Robinson's only daughter, Sharon, the book is more to honor the memory of her amazing father, than an objective biography. Her insights are deeply personal and intimate. The descriptions of Jim Crow in the 1940's and 1950's are a shame to our country. This book would be a wonderful addition in a collection of Jackie Robinson books. A daughter's memories might be magnified, rather than clear so other books might be a good balance. However, her voice is unique and the photos feature several handwritten letters Jackie wrote to his wife and children."
