About this title: A leading cognitive scientist reveals how insights from the study of babies explain the rise of such uniquely human traits as humor, disgust, religion, art, and morality. "If you really want to understand human nature, you must observe people as they are before they are corrupted by language and culture, by MTV and Hebrew school. You must look at babies. " So contends psychologist Paul Bloom-whom Steven Pinker calls "the wunderkind of cognitive science"-in this fascinating account of how we learn to make sense of reality. All humans see the world in two fundamentally different ways: Even ...

"Paul Bloom is a respected developmental psychologist who describes recent findings that suggest that babies are natural born dualists. He borrows from the evolutionary psychology approach to show how this innate dualism eventuates into the human concerns with art, spirituality and the moral sense. This is an easy to read book, not a professional tome."
"The author of this book contends that people are natural-born dualists, and even babies see the world in terms of bodies and souls. I thought that this book had the potential to be very interesting, but instead I found it to be slow-moving and disjointed. It definitely did not contain as much information and theory about child development as I would have hoped, based on the title. By far the best chapter was the one on disgust, which was quite amusing."
"Bloom's well researched ideas into the psychological basis for dualism is a welcome addition towards an explanation for why this singular idea is so hard to shake. Though I think he certainly makes his case, there is another reason why dualism has become such an 'immortal' idea. As I state in my own book on the subject, the basis of this idea is BOTH ontological (read psychological) and historical. The historical and cultural momentum of this idea is at least as important as the natural inclination to perceive the world through dualist's eyes. This phenomenon is overdetermined in that more than one source sparks its genesis. Furthermore, the combination of psychological AND historical forces imbue dualism with the power it has."
