"First of all, Dave Ramsey is a Christian entertainer. Like Dr. Laura, Dave springboards his books from his talk radio shows and life experiences. His advice is simple and folks starting early in life do well to heed his advice on debt and that is....no debt. It all gets a bit murky for those of us who have learned essential money truths later in life, yet there are some embraceable suggestions to be found within the pages of both Ramsey's "Peace" and "Makeover." It is the advice my Grandparents would have given me.
Drop the popular cultural feeling of entitlement. None of us are entitled to more than God gives us each day via hard work and other non-monetary avenues. Live within your means. Do without. Save for tomorrow. Store up cash for rainy days (Dave recommends 1K to start with). Sacrifice.
Don't go into debt for any reason (not for cars, not for college) other than your mortgage (this is especially challenging given the high cost of health care, career education, unexpected disasters, big family expenses, and current economic climate). Buy a reasonable house that you can afford, key words that lie at the heart of America's housing crisis "house you can afford" (and don't trust the realtor or the loan officer to be able to advise you honestly on this point) on a 15 year loan.
Never buy anything at full price. Always bargain. Shop estate sales, thrift stores, craigslist, garage sales and take the time to clip coupons, compare grocery ads, and look for bargains. Buy used v/s new. Eat at home. Ride the bus. Forgo the Starbucks (unless you buy it with a coupon, on sale, within your grocery budget).
Pay off the smallest debts first and then use the extra money to tackle bigger loans/debts until they are all paid off. Consider selling everything you own and working a second job (it is not suggested that mothers work outside the home) to make the pay off happen faster.
The Ramsey books I read were written prior to seeing gas prices hit $4 per gallon, prior to the job outsourcing impact, prior to corporate collapses, bank bailouts, and housing market plummets. Yet, the common sense advice of Dave Ramsey, and that of our Grandparents, to live differently may inspire positive change toward self sufficiency for all America."
"This is the most practical personal finance advice I've ever received -- and I've read Millionaire Next Door and am a big fan of Suze Orman. Those "top 10 ways to financial freedom" lists in which a key step is "giving up your daily latte," are cute. But they don't compare to Ramsey's well-thought-out, systematic approach to getting from under debt. Ramsey moves very quickly from the reasons why you can't get ahead (having a lackadaisical attitude when it comes to debt) into the practical (now here's what to do about it). I was skeptical about his approach when I first heard about it from my mom, but after reading i, I discovered that Ramsey's "Total Money Makeover" is really a no brainer. I read this book in one afternoon."
"In seven “baby” steps, Dave Ramsey will show you how to get slowly but surely out of debt, save for an emergency and built wealth. This is not another get rich scheme, but a proven method to a financial makeover that will enable you to retire with dignity and leave a legacy to your children. Yes, not only can you change your future but also your whole family tree. The “Total Money Makeover” is full of encouraging testimonies that say “If I did it, you can do it too”. Be weird, and as the author says “live like no one else, so later on you can live like no one else!” It really works if you do it… this is your plan to financial fitness."
"I read Financial Peace years ago. We tried to live the plan, but looking back we could have done a lot better. The Total Money Makeover takes the same plan and breaks it down into more detailed babysteps. This REALLY works! We've had our $1000 emergency saving account for years now and have hardly had to dip into it because we really think through what an emergency is. Most of the time we have been able to wait a few weeks until the "extra paycheck," tax return or a bonus comes through instead of using our savings. The debt snowball really works. I was amazed when I saw how much money is going toward our last debt! It will only be a few more months to get it paid off. Yes, we did stop retirement for the past year--it was a simple form to fill out at work and only took a couple minutes. The money that was previously in our IRA is still growing, but we're not adding to it right now. When that debt is gone and we have our 3-6 month savings we'll start it up again. What doesn't make sense is having debt when you retire and using your money from your 401K/IRA to pay off the debt.
This book is just common sense in a big way! There is so much peace in being in control of our money and our marriage is so much better because we have GOALS that we plan together.
This book is a great gift for college graduations and weddings! We buy it on Dave Ramsey's website when it goes on sale for $10 a copy."
