About this title: Dutch Island, Maine, is quite literally haunted by the massacre of its inhabitants, an event that occurred over 300 years ago. A gang of thugs invades Dutch Island in the present day in search of their leader Moloch's abused wife, Marianne, who fled to the island after stealing her husband's money. Marianne will find protectors in both Melancholy Joe Dupree, the island's police officer--who, like her husband, has some strange link to the island's bloody past--and the angry ghosts of the slaughtered settlers who will not permit further violence on the island.

"I find this book badly written. The dialogues are terrible! But I can't put a book down in the first place so I forced myself through it. And the ending where brilliant to my astonishment. I might have turned out so surprised just because I had lost all faith in the writer but it made the rating go from bad to ok. I think this story will be amazing seen in a movie, so I have big hopes for it when it comes out."
"I love John Connolly's work. He can often push me to the edge on violence, and this book took me beyond it. It has and builds suspense well, and does have some characters that are likable and built with complexity. But for me this just had too much violence. I look forward to going back to the Charlie Parker series. :-)"
"This stand-alone set on an island off the coast of Maine features a struggle between good and evil in a place where the lines between past and present become blurred."
"Bad Men is a very creepy book by John Connolly author of the Charlie Parker series. I found it to be a delicious book to read, full of island lore as the setting is Dutch Island off the coast of Portland Maine, formerly known as Sanctuary. The mc is alternately an island policeman whose family has been there since the 1600's, a young mother who fled an abusive marriage, and the island itself where something is awakening after years of an uneasy peace. When the bad men come you won't be able to put the book down (but you will almost want to, to take a breath before plunging back in). This thriller with trademark Connolly touches of the supernatural gets a 9+ in my book journal."
