Description: Fine. Paperback. 6 1/2h x 4 1/2w. Picture is scan of book not a stock photo. A very nice 727 page first edition paperback. "Overlong getting to parts. Not a fan of using words to try and prolong the inevitable. I do believe in a reasonable climactic ending but when it stretches to the point of uncomfortable, get to it already, like the ending of this novel then I start to wonder if I want to read others by this person. Overall though there were enough good reading points to warrant it, because when it was good it was a fast page turner to keep going to get to the next bit."
"This is not a fantasy book based on a street urchin making good, but rather is more of a coming-of-age story of a highborn person knowing that he has some magic. It's not a complete story unto itself, as it leaves too many loose ends. I'd rather trilogies be written as one entire book than have loose ends all over the place."
"As I remembered, Lackey's books are great on plot, but oh the introspection gets soooooo boring. Also, I find there is something about her writing that puts me off - I am not sure what one word would describe it properly. "Perky" might - but when the situations get serious, then that's not the word. It is something that strikes me as totally 'female', as in the enthusiastic, bouncy, immature, gabbley, big-eyed type. She uses italics everywhere, not just for a small emphasis, but for the introspective parts - and not all of them, usually just the beginning.
The plots are great, if only she'd talk less. Don't think I'll wade through books two and three, even to find out how it all ends."
"This fantasy book was a mixed bag for me. It felt too long and the pacing was uneven. It definitely dragged at times. I dislike clearly defined "good" and "bad" guys, and unfortunately there are few moral subtleties here. The "bad" guys were dreadfully written and I literally had to skip those chapters to avoid reading (yet again) how much they relish torturing their helpless victims. However despite all these flaws, I did end up enjoying the book and I wanted to know where the story would go in the next book of the trilogy. The world is fairly well developed, the characters have some interesting moments, and the writing style is adequate. Overall it is highly flawed but still has some merit for fantasy fans."
