"Montmorency is the story of a thief who falls through a glass roof and hovers on the brink of death. A brilliant young doctor convinces the prison warden in charge to let him saves the thief's life. The doctor takes the thief to lectures to display the miraculous recovery of Prisoner 493. After completing his term in prison, and with an exclusive knowledge of Victorian London's new sewer system gained by listening to the various lectures he attended with the doctor, 493 becomes the most successful and elusive thief in London-a man he calls Scarper. In order to keep his identity a secret, he has also become a man named Montmorency, who is a respectable, wealthy gentleman. By maintaining the dual identities, he has a successful career as a thief, but Montmorency starts to prefer the honest life. And one tiny mistake could betray his whole existence! Will he decide to quit being Scarper the thief, or will he continue to live as two different people? And can he keep it a secret?
Don't miss the exciting sequels: Montmorency on the Rocks Montmorency and the Assassins Montmorency's Revenge"
"This book had an incredibly unique, interesting premise... however, I won't be reading the sequels. The idea was amazing, but the writing style and handling of the idea amature. None of the characters ever really got developed, even the main character. For all we've heard, he has no family, friends, or past life at all. That made him fall way flat. Also, all the pivotal turning points in the book happened in the last 30 pages, by which I was skimming just to get through the book. Amazing idea, horrible handling."
"An interesting "Tween" book in that there are no YA characters... I would feel comfortable recommending it to either Teens or Tweens. It's set in Victorian London and features Montmorency, a petty thief who has a horrible accident and becomes the pet project of a surgeon while he's recuperating and doing his time in prison. While in prison, he develops a master plan for when he gets out that will involve using London's new sewer system to become a master thief. Necessary to the plan is a dual persona, the first being "Montmorency, Gentleman" and the other being "Scarper, servant." The period descriptions are good and I love how the character becomes more and more comfortable in his role as a Gentleman. Also listened to the audiobook version which was read by Stephen Fry whom I adore."
"It took me a while to get through this one... I was a bit put off by the whole two personalities thing - felt a bit over emphasized, somehow. The fact that he actually named his other personality was a bit odd - although I realise that was also so that he could tell people who asked what Scarper's name was. However I did enjoy the way his character changed over time as he became more comfortable with being a gentleman and I also liked the way he became an 'honest man' at the end and gave everything back to people. I enjoyed his relationships with both Fox-Selwyn and Dr Farcett, which were well developed and convincing. The ending felt a bit like the ending of the 7th Harry Potter book where J K Rowling gave a brief (and confusing) summary of the next 17 years or so in a few lines... That said, this ending, though similar, was much less trite (and isn't remotely confusing either, for the record)."
