"A collection of short essays compiled by McCullough, one of my favorite historical writers, throughout his career. McCullough has a gift of making seemingly uninteresting or irrelevant parts of history come alive with a sense of extreme importance. Often I find myself saying, 'How did I not know that before?'
He got a little carried away with a few of these, but I particularly enjoyed his essays on Alexander von Humboldt, Roosevelt and the Badlands, and his glowing bit on Washington, DC. His 1986 commencement address to Middlebury graduates makes you want to travel the world and read everything all at once. McCullough makes you frustrated that you can't learn about history faster."
"I love the way David McCullough writes. He writes biographies and histories that read like novels. This book was broken down into essays on extraordinary events and famous, interesting people who have left their mark on the world. Teddy Roosevelt, Louis Agassiz, Harriet Beecher Stowe, etc. There are seventeen chapters about seventeen fascinating people and/or events. Most of these were written as articles and published in magazines. McCullough just brought them together and made them into a book."
"McCullough is amazing, of course. Jesse & I both loved this book and found it hard to take turns reading it;) Brave Companions is a collection of short pieces written throughout McCullough's career, all tied together because they portray "brave" individuals throughout history. My personal favorite was "The Treasure from the Carpentry Shop.""
"I enjoyed this book very much. The first two stories were only ok but I did "Love" the quote, "Look at your Fish" in the second story. It's my current mantra. There are some wonderful stories here. I especially enjoyed, the Harriet Beecher Stowe, the Brooklyn Bridge and the story about Washington. So many books to read......"
