"For someone who is not entirely enthralled with non-fiction, this was one novel that definitely moved me and inspired me in many ways. The writing was not top of the line, but when can a non-writer write a book with the tenacity and grace as some of the finest authors in the world? Exactly. So, going in thinking that this book is just going to be a good read and incredible, is the right frame of mind to be in. Being a swimmer, and someone who aspires to great heights, this is almost essential reading. However, the writing does bring it down a notch. I really liked the chapters where Lynne was preparing for big swims. Her goals seemed so lofty at times, but when she accomplished them, I could only just smile and cheer on the inside. There were some swims where I literally shivered thinking how cold it would have been in the water. I really do recommend this novel to those who enjoy non-fiction, but do not expect to be blown away by the writing."
"Cox, one of the world's leading long-distance swimmers, has been a risk-taker ever since she was nine and chose the freezing water of a New Hampshire pool in a storm over getting out and doing calisthenics. She gives remarkably detailed account of her major swims and all that went right and wrong with them.she's 45 and she's swimming to Antarctica. It's an inspiring account of perseverance, determination, and courage."
"don't usually like autobiographies, but this story is really remarkable. It's the story of Lynne Cox, the swimmer who swam from Alaska to Russia. I remember reading about her in the paper when she made the swim, but I didn't know that was just one of her many incredible swims. She set a world record for swimming the English Channel when she was 16, she was the first person to swim the Strait of Magellan, around the Cape of Good Hope, and between the north and south islands of New Zealand. She doesn't use a wetsuit, just a regular bathing suit and she can swim in 38 degree water, including a mile long swim in Antarctica. Quite amazing story."
"Fascinating read. Reminded me of Three Cups of Tea, though in this case Cox was promoting world peace, one swim at a time. Cox's narrative of her amazing experiences as a cold, open water swimmer, transcends the subject matter. Can't believe the things she did and endured to become the person she was born to be. Very inspirational and interesting. Recommend it to anyone and everyone."
