"I didn't finish it. Not because it's difficult or long but because it's just pap. Cover-to-cover pap. Hackneyed tripe. Air-inflated mysteriousness and banal oblique sentences with zero depth. It's like Casteneda without characters; Chaucer without subtlety or humour; Don Quixote without imagination. I skipped to the end and yes of course he finds his f'ing sword and he doesn't go bragging to his mates about it.
I haven't read any of his others and probably won't. Does he ever stop lecturing and start storytelling?"
"Coelho tells the story of a spiritual journey along one of the medieval routes to Compostela. It includes "how-to" exercises, which personally I don't plan to do, but he does reveal some universal truths and paradoxes that are worth thoughtful consideration however you get to them."
"I have just finished "The Pilgrimage." I was moved to tears. My heart opened yet again. A great clarity comes when we forgive ourselves. For when we do, we will know what we will use our swords for. I was so touched, so lifted up by reading Señor Coelho's experience. I am so glad that he wrote it down and has shared his journey on "the strange road to Santiago," with the world. "The Pilgrimage" is a testament to fighting "the good fight" and to energetics. I haven't ever met Señor Coelho, but right now I could give him such a big hug and kiss. I write this with happy tears running down my cheeks. Keep posting it increases the possibilities. Cheers, Karen in Canada."
"This was my first read of Paulo Coelho. His writing is poetic and particularly good in conveying spirituality. The premise of this particular story did little for me, not being a Catholic or having much truck for the whole mystic society etc. However, there were some very interesting ideas about all sorts of issues in life, teaching etc. I'm now keen to read his other work."
