About this title: The critics made the inevitable comparisons to MAUS when reviewing this graphic novel-style memoir. But this deeply personal child's-eye view of Iran during the fall of the Shah deserves to be considered in its own right. Marjane Satrapi is related both to the old Persian royal family and to Communist rebels. Therefore, it's not surprising that she was raised a sheltered child of privilege and educated to be independent-minded. Unfortunately, the unpleasant realities of life in '70s and '80s Iran--violent demonstrations, imprisonment and executions of relatives and family friends, bombings by ...

"an artistic, wonderful graphic and written experience. This book isl one for history I am sure. It arrived in time, well wrapped and I'll keep it forever!"
"I was really only vaguely interested in this. I had it on my to-read list more out of obligation because it was something I thought I 'should' read....eventually. But truth be told it didn't look all that appealing to me. First, I don't 'do' graphic novels. Second, the art looked childish and unappealing. Third, the subject matter sounded almost unendurably dreary. But, it sort of called to me at the library the other day - sitting propped up on a staff picks shelf. So, I nabbed it and dove in!
The verdict - I was wrong on all counts. First, I guess I have to admit to myself that sometimes I can 'do' graphic novels and frankly, after having read this, I can't imagine having this story told any other way. Which brings me to the next point. The art is indeed simple, but surprisingly and impressively evocative - again I can't really imagine it any other way. And finally, a story about growing up in Iran does have its bleak points - there is no escaping that. But I was impressed with how well she was able to incorporate levity. The scene in which Marjane's parents smuggle an Iron Maiden poster from Turkey was impossibly hysterical.
Highly recommended! It's a short read so even if you're wary this isn't a huge investment of time."
"Funny, frightening, and deeply emotional, "Persepolis" is definitely a book that should be read by as many people as possible. The point of view of a child is already such a special and strange thing, that when you take a child's point of view of very extraordinary events and situations, such as the Islamic Revolution in Iran, you end up with a very powerful book. Add to this the stark, simple black and white illustrations by author Marjane Satrapi, and the result is very powerful, indeed. Satrapi's narrative voice is akin to audible storytelling; she makes you feel like she is sitting with you, telling you about her life and memories, as opposed to adding writerly flourishes that would make it into more of a "novel." This serves the story well, for there is no sense of removal from the events she describes. It is clear that this is someone's life experience, and it is incredible. Read this."

******* Lucu, apa adanya sekaligus menyentuh. Itu point terbaik dari buku ini. Kalau masalah gambar, menurut pandangan pribadi saya agak unik (mendekati aneh).
Bayangkan saja, ketika krisis melanda, mereka masih sempat2nya berpesta pora.
