"This book was straight up fascinating to me. I have always been interested in the Crusades. I think that most Christians, whether they will admit to it or not, feel difficult to explain emotions of romanticism in connection to the Crusades. As a good friend of mine put it, we transfer our spiritual battle to the relm of reality. Honestly, who wouldn't want to march behind the Cross of Jesus into battle against the forces of evil.
After reading this first volume of Runciman's History fo the Crusades, I had to reevaluate my attraction. In some cases the motivation was pure, but it's apparent that the soldiers and princes were probably lead and influenced by the other side as much as they were by God.
The writing was very academic, but to me it read like a thriller. There was a real sense of truth is stranger than fiction all throughout the story.
"Written in the 50s and still widely read today. Runciman was a pioneer of modern crusading history. Although there were plenty of learned articles floating about in high brow journals, Runciman was the first to write an effective synthesis, and did a lot of his own original research. Its a testament to history writing.
I've read all three volumes, and each is written with the same remarkable work ethic, candour of language and sheer honesty. A remarkable historian and quite possible the greatest piece of history writing since the 50s."
