"I think this book may have a limited audience: Those interested in Beverly Cleary, or those interested in the 1st half of the 20th century in Oregon. That said, it was really interesting to me, and I whipped on through it."
"If memory serves, I started to read this when it came out in 1988, but was deterred by the sad fact that to my 12-year-old self, Beverly Cleary was passe (when I had moved on to much more adult things, you know, like V.C. Andrews) and by a central character less compelling than Emily Bartlett, Leigh Botts, Jane Purdy (still my favorites). But I'm glad I waited, actually, because all the geography means a LOT more to me now; I too love going to the Hollywood Theater, for instance, and I have been to her school, library, and the houses on NE 37th and NE Hancock. Plus I get the adult stuff more, but I'm not so far from reading her other books as not to get the references (ring OWCHEE bells!).
--- This could still describe a Reed College freshman:
"A Reed College freshman I shall call Roger . . . invited me to a dance held in the Reed College Commons. Roger turned out to be more interesting than high school boys, even though his dancing was worse than mine. He loped to some mysterious rhythm all his own, with great enthusiasm and sweat on his brow."
On another personal note, I like that she chose Chaffey (and then Berkeley) over Reed!
--- Finally, I am going to start saying overtown instead of downtown now."
"It has been years since reading this book but I have read it several times. I really loved it, it is an autobiography about the early life of the author Beverly Cleary."
