But how many of us can place that event in the context of the entire dramatic year in which it took place? From the death of Edward the Confessor in early January to the Christmas coronation of Duke William of Normandy, there is an almost uncanny symmetry, as well as a ...

"I enjoyed the book as my first introduction to this pivotal point in English history. I'd heard of the Battle of Hastings before, but didn't really know any details about who fought whom. This book does a good job of explaining the events leading up to the battle, the various groups involved, and some discussion of how the battle's outcome affected life for the average Englishman. If I have any quibble at all, it is that the author relies entirely too much on assumption. In the introduction, he states that primary sources from the time period are very rare; the majority of his source material was either French/Norman or Norwegian, and there's very little available from the English people themselves. As he cautions, a lot of the material is biased toward each author's "home team"; i.e., French accounts favor William the Conqueror, accounts written by the clergy have a decided religious slant to them, etc. But when there is no concrete evidence about a specific event or conversation, the author relies entirely too much on speculation and assumption. To me, it would have been better to just say, "We don't know why Harold held the line instead of advancing," for example."
"A gift for the history geek. The book recounts the simulataneous (independently planned) 1066 invasions of England...by the Normans from France and the Vikings from Scandanavia who decided to storm the island separately within days of each other (this was pretty unlucky for the English). Howarth re-traces the steps of the three armies and ties this together in a gripping tale of near misses. Harold of England scored a heroic victory over the Vikings at Stamford Bridge in the North only to rush to defeat against the Normans at Hastings days later in the South. It all could have been different, if only..... Howarth gets the reader right into the muck and grime of the day."
"This is one of the best succinct examinations and histories of the Norman Conquest, the foundation of modern English and American culture and language. Read it if you like history, war, England, or language."
