"In 1941, before the United States became involved in the war, Captain Cal Cormack is a army captain stationed in Zurich. His entire role is to handle a spy named Stahl who has risen in the Nazi hierarchy to a top-level position. Cal is dismayed to read a German newspaper describing the state funeral given to his spy. At a subsequent meeting with British intelligent agent, Cal is stunned to learn the British know about his spy and that the British are convinced his cover was blown and he escaped. The funeral was the Nazi way to cover the disappearance of a public official. The British also think that Stahl is headed for London. With his high rank, Stahl is a walking encyclopedia of German war plans. Cal is ordered to go to London and work with the British to find Stahl before German assassins can get him. Soon, Cal finds out at least two Germans are in London and on Stahl's trail. Despite numerous also leads and a general state of confusion, Cal finds Stahl alive and well. The setting, London during the blitz, lends a great deal of authenticity to this novel. Overall, a good, gripping novel."
"A fairly well-written mystery/thriller. I think Lawton got a little caught up in Writing About the Blitz - dropping prominent historical figures in here and there - but I didn't see his twists coming, and for that I am always grateful."
