"This was the first book of Hillman writings I ever read. It blew me away and landed me smack in the camp of the archetypal psychology - something I have never regretted doing"
"I came to this book after reading Thomas Moore's Care of the Soul. This book was edited by Mr. Moore, and contains excerpts from Dr. Hillman's extensive works. It is about the exploration of meaning in our lives. This book provided my first encounter with many key ideas, or greatly expanded my understanding of their significance. An example is letting our hands guide us to our right work. He writes, "The hands themselves wantto do things." By noticing what are hands naturally like to do, we are moved to act in our own behalf by pursuing our right work.
His thought processes wander in a delightful way. For example, Dr. Hillman advocates creating interesting ceilings, and he explains in fascinating detail what ceilings mean to us. Then he writes, "I want to preserve and restore the simple gesture of looking upward." I think that's very wonderful.
He articulates many ideas that I have a hard time putting into words. When we lose the thread of our life story, "it no longer holds events together and gives them sense, it no longer provides the mode of experiencing. The patient is in search of a new story, or of reconnecting with her old one." That's me. I could spend a lot of time working with that notion.
This book is not an easy read, but I have found many, many passages where I can use my highlighter pen, and I return to them from time to time to see where my understanding has deepened and expanded over time."
