""Most of us trudge in a straight line. All day, every day, we march like sheep. Look straight ahead. What do you see? We spending our livings walking into our own mirrors. All we see is ourselves as we walk down the road." - Huila
"Feel the earth, keep the integrity of the heart. Keep the spine in line. Let your heart shine. Relax, don't strain. The white man has to strain. Has to flex his muscles. Be soft. Be like water. Water is soft, and is the most powerful force on earth." - Huila
I did like the characters and relationship between Huila and Teresita. The description of all the food was not my thing. I bought this book on sale in October of last year when studying as I wanted to experience Mexico and the reviews were glowing. I carried this book around with me to Stockholm in November 2008, then France at Christmas while visiting Lonica. Lonica lived in Mexico for 5 years and our friendship is my connection. I didn't finished HBD until after my Masters and I had "nothing to do". I forced myself to finish reading the book as I should of gone to the library. It was interesting and at times enjoyable, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless they had a specific interest in the subject matter. Finished reading a year later, October 2009."
Urrea gives us a real feel for what it was like just prior to the Mexican Revolution - Providing us too, with background to the embryonic stages of liberation theology. Even better, he gives us a true story, filling in with some of the best character development I have read. He really is a master, a poet.
His intermingling of Spanish with English might throw some, but if the reader sticks with it, they will find gold.
Simply, this is the story of a woman who worked miracles, whose non-violent power was so great she was ultimately considered an enemy of the state. Urrea explores her with balance and humanity. He opens the readers eyes to the natural world - one that encompasses spirit and what some describe as magic. He spins a tale that takes us into the world of the poor, Curanderas, workers, the wealthy, los indios, politics. But what touched me most was the intersections, the relationships.
This book goes so much further than I can describe. It was very personal to me -but I have the feeling it will be personal to many, in different ways. I now have to find his other books."
"I really enjoyed this book. It is It is a fictionalized account of the real life of Teresita Urrea, who lived in Mexico in the late 1800s. She had healing powers and the gift of clairvoyancy, and was known as the Saint of Cabora. She was seen as a rebel by both the Mexican government and some higher ups of the Catholic church, although she preached much about the teachings of Jesus.
There were a number of things I really liked about this book. I loved the differing perspectives of the characters that were newly arrived Europeans, those of European descent who had been in Mexico for generations, and the indigenous people. There were a few passages that were interesting perspectives on the unique blend of religion and culture.
I loved the depiction of Teresita in the novel. Towards the end of the novel she was spiritual and profound, but well balanced with wit and humor. I really liked some of her techniques of active non-violence towards the end of the novel as well.
"Set in late 1800's Mexico amid the political turmoil of General Porfirio Diaz's regime "The Hummingbird's Daughter" recounts the real-life story of Urrea's great-aunt Teresita. The illegitimate daughter of the patron and one of the indios working his ranch, Teresita eventually became known as Santa Teresa, the Saint of Cabora. Apprenticed to the colorful curandera (healer) Huila at an early age she eventually became known for her midwifery skills, healing powers and supposed return from the dead. Eventually her popularity among the laypeople inspired massive pilgrimages to her home and attracted the attention of General Di az himself, who saw her as a threat to his authority when she began encouraging the Yaqui Indians to fight for their land. After spending twenty years researching Teresita's life and even the healing techniques of the indios, Urrea has created an enthralling story filled with lively characters who all but jump off the page. I especially appreciated his colorful use of colloquial Spanish, which not only reminded me of some of my relatives but made his characters seem all the more human."
