Celtic and medieval scholar Jean Markale meticulously searches the obscure history of the Cathars of ancient Persia. He explores their doctrine, their secret pact with the Knights Templar, and why they earned the ruthless persecution of Church and state. Using all available documentation, Markale reveals the nature of the mysterious treasure spirited away from the fortress at Montsegur the night before its surrender to French troops.

"Pulled this off of the shelf last night and read straight through 40 pages - would have read more but I couldn't keep my eyes open. Can't wait to curl up with it again."
"The Cathares were a society of non-violent vegetarian celibate people known for their "purity" and their totally out-of-this-world approach to daily life. There isn't nearly as much in English about them as I wish. This book is a little dull, but the phenomenon it describes changed western history, though most people don't know that. Somebody needs to write a really great novel about the Cathares. I meant to do that...haven't gotten around to it yet. I wish somebody would."
