"I decided to read this book because Jennifer Holm is going to be the guest speaker at a conference I will be attending soon. I'll be honest--I wasn't exactly thrilled when I picked up this book. But to my surprise, I found myself engrossed in the story
Set in America in the early 1800s, 16-year-old Jane is a freespirit raised by her doctor father to be a be an independent thinker. She suddenly becomes aware that she is not like the other girls thanks to her father's apprentice, William, who encourages her to attend Miss Hepplewhite's Young Ladies Academy and become a lady of society. Later, when William asks her to join him in marriage and travel to Indian territory in what is now Washington state, she can't wait to take the journey of a lifetime and show William what a accomplished young lady she has become. The long journey to Shoalwater Bay and the hard days of settling afterward make Jane ponder many questions: Does it really matter how she dresses? Was Papa right about William? Does she have the skill and determination to survive on the frontier? Should she honor her word or follow her heart?
I'll be looking forward to reading more of this series soon!"
"Very exciting. Story of a young girl, stolden by love from her small home and father in Philidephia, and embarks on a journey taking her to the untamed, unciviliazed, unsettled terriotory of Orgen. Has a wonderful ending."
"I was skeptical about this one, but was pleasantly surprised. It was one of those cases where I came home from the library with twelve books, because I couldn't decide what I really wanted to read. I continued to dither at home and Michael suggested I read them in alphabetical order. Boston Jane was the winner and, because I am dealing with a bad case of insomnia, I was up reading it for a good portion of the night. A four star book is one I can spend a sleepless night reading and not have adverse feelings toward during the day.
The writing isn't earth shattering or even profound, but Jane is an interesting character dealing with all the struggles and insecurities of growing up. Her honest expression of ambivalence about her true character is one with which teens of most time periods can relate. Jane's is an appealing story of the Washington frontier that I intend to follow.
Now to the next in the alphabetical pile, but hopefully I'll get some sleep instead."
"For 10 yrs +. I sped through this book so fast and couldn't wait to get the sequel. A very fun YA historical novel. Some things do not come across terribly realistic, but for the most part it is. :)"
