About this title: The United States is in the process of staking out not just the globe but the heavens as a militarized sphere of influence. Chomsky investigates how it came to this moment, what kind of peril it presents, and why rulers are willing to jeopardize the future of the species.

"Noam Chomsky always brings a unique level of clarity to analyzing modern international power dynamics. While the majority of our intellectual classes are limited by political taboos that they are unwilling or unable to break, Chomsky specializes in identifying those taboos and putting them in their proper place. That is to say, Chomsky calls a spade a spade, and doesn't waste any time doing so. Hegemony or Survival is Chomsky at his best. He makes the case that our political leaders and the narrow sectors of power which they serve consistently place maintaining and expanding their power over basic survival. From going into Iraq even though it was widely understood that it would increase American security risks to terrorism, to playing brinkmanship with a Soviet Union that was painfully aware of its military disadvantages instead of cutting a deal to scale back nuclear armaments; the masters of the universe readily gamble with our lives without missing a beat. Highly recommended for any anti-imperialist."
"For anyone interested in American foreign policy as it has existed in the later half of the 20th century and early in the new millennia, Noam Chomsky's Hegemony or Survival is an instructive guide, highlighting all the major events of the aforementioned time period.

"This book is another eye opener on US armed and political involvement in different parts of the world. It also highlights US foreign policy and the race on world control through organised crimes, wars, bullying and intimidation. It is simply a fantastic book and worth a read but it falls short from time to time from going deeper into some topics but it refrains from doing that. I am not really sure why but at least it covers the main topics quite well so that the reader has enough details to start reasearching for more information."
"The only thing that keeps this book from being a 5 is Chomsky's narrative. It can seem overly dry and detached and considering the claims he's making (namely that America and Israel are the world's biggest sponsors and perpetrators of terrorism). Maybe that's what keeps Noam Chomsky from getting silenced by the government is that he doesn't seemed fired up about doing anything about it. He wouldn't be opposed to those who do but he, unlike Charles Derber, doesn't sound like he'd be holding a sign and/or burning a flag in protest of American policies.
That being said I think that it would have been just as useful for this book to be condensed as a very short reader with brief arguments and historical examples of questionable (to be generous) American foreign policy actions relating to the argumets. Or at least all of the examples could be condensed and put in an appendix because there are so many good examples here."
